Vino di Anna 'Palmento Bianco' Sicilia 2023The wines of Mount Etna have really been speaking to me over the past year. There are so many interesting wines that all capture the unique volcanic energy there in their own way. I especially like the wines of Anna Martens and Eric Narioo and the way they combine freshness and playful rusticity with the darker tones of the volcanos influence. Anna, an Aussie, and Eric, a Frenchie, started making wine on Etna in 2008. Everything is worked by hand,

2020 was a great vintage in Liguria

with his wines being housed in barrel from anywhere from a year up to five years before they see the light of day and the inside of our anticipatory glassware

pressed by gravity to neutral oak barrels and foudres to complete malolactic conversion and rest for 12 months before bottling without fining or filtering

all while being light and refreshing

and while the fruit is rich and honeyed (just barely off-dry at 3

and it is complemented beautifully with plump

In less careful hands this could be too rich and dense

orange blossom

It's stupendously delicious with a chill and though it certainly matches the vibe of the badger taking a selfie on the label

dark fruit lifted up by a bright elegance that speaks to an auteur's level of grape selection and elevage

Upon my first encounter I picked up a hint of smokiness which I am told is common in Pouilly Fume

' Certainly would be perfect for the same types of fare
